Chronological Age Calculator

Exact age in years, months and days on any date, with test-date and corrected age options.

What is chronological age

Chronological age is the time that has passed from a date of birth to a chosen date, counted in years, months and days. It is a calendar measure. It does not describe health, maturity, or how old someone seems. Clinics use it so a score can be compared with the right age norms.

You can report it as 7 years, 9 months and 17 days, or in the testing form 7;9;17. Both mean the same clock. This page also gives total months, weeks, days and hours, the weekday of birth, and a next-birthday count. If you turn on Born early, you get corrected age until chronological age 3.

How to calculate chronological age

Work on paper the same way the calculator does:

  1. Write the Age on date on top and the date of birth underneath, aligned as years, months, days.
  2. Subtract days. If the days go negative, borrow from the month column.
  3. In calendar mode, the borrowed month has the real length of the month before Age on. In testing mode, that month has 30 days.
  4. Subtract months. If months go negative, borrow 12 months from the years.
  5. Subtract years. Do not round up.

Worked example, testing method (30-day months). Date of birth 21 December 2018. Test date 8 October 2026.

Worked subtraction for 21 December 2018 to 8 October 2026 using 30-day months
YearsMonthsDays
Test date2026108
Date of birth20181221
Borrow days2026938
Borrow months20252138
Result7917

Days 8 minus 21 cannot be done, so borrow 30 days. Months become 9, days become 38. Then 38 minus 21 is 17. Months 9 minus 12 cannot be done, so borrow 12 months from the years. Years become 2025, months become 21. Then 21 minus 12 is 9, and 2025 minus 2018 is 7. Age is 7;9;17. Put the same dates in this tool with testing mode on and you should see that figure.

Chronological age formula

Test date minus date of birth equals Y;M;D. That is the whole formula. Y is completed years, M is completed months after those years, D is leftover days. Nothing is added for a nearly finished month. If Age on is before the birth date, there is no age to report. If Age on is in the future, the same subtraction tells you what the age will be on that date.

A second calendar example from ranking guides: born 15 March 2015, age on 10 September 2024. Calendar months give 9;5;26. September is month 9, March is month 3, so months start at 6. Days 10 minus 15 need a borrow from August, which has 31 days, so days become 26 and months become 5. Years stay 9.

30-day months or calendar months

Pearson assessments support for WIAT-III states that all months are assumed to have 30 days, and ages are not rounded up. That is testing mode here. It keeps every examiner on the same grid when they look up a standard score.

Calendar mode uses the real length of the month you borrow from. February has 28 days, or 29 in a leap year. January and March have 31. Born on 31 January, age on 28 February in a common year is 0 years, 0 months and 28 days in calendar mode, because you borrow January's 31 days. Testing mode would borrow 30, so the leftover days differ.

Another split: born 28 November 2019, age on 11 March 2026. Testing mode is 6;3;13. Calendar mode is 6;3;11, because February 2026 has 28 days, not 30. If you are writing a WIAT or WISC protocol, use testing mode. If you are answering "how old is this person today", use calendar mode. Name the method in your note.

Leap day rule: if the date of birth is 29 February, a non-leap year counts that birthday as reached on 1 March. Born 29 February 2000, age on 28 February 2001 is 0;11;30. Age on 1 March 2001 is 1;0;0.

Chronological age for testing

WISC, WIAT, CELF, and many speech-language batteries ask for chronological age at the test date. Enter that date in Age on. If testing spans two sessions, use the first session date unless the manual for that test says otherwise. Super Duper, Pearson, and school psych workflows all treat that first day as the age used for norms.

Do not round up. A child at 8;11;29 is still 8 years for the table that stops at 8;11. Rounding to 9 would pull the wrong conversion. This calculator never rounds. If the printed manual disagrees with a website, including this one, follow the manual. Copy the Y;M;D line into your report, and keep a screenshot or the copied string in the file.

Total months help when a form asks for age in months only. 7;9;17 is 93 months plus leftover days. Those leftover days do not become another month. Weeks and total days are extras for progress notes, not a replacement for Y;M;D when the norms table is built on years and months.

Corrected age for premature babies

Corrected age, also called adjusted age, is chronological age minus the weeks the baby was born before 40 weeks. Weeks early equal 40 minus gestational age at birth. Born at 32 weeks means 8 weeks early. A baby who is 20 weeks old chronologically then has a corrected age of 12 weeks.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, through HealthyChildren.org, describes corrected age for tracking development in the first two years. Some teams keep using it until age 3. This tool shows corrected age until chronological age 3, then hides it. Vaccines follow chronological age, not corrected age. Do not delay immunisation because a corrected age looks younger.

If Age on is still before the due date, there is no corrected age yet. You will see how many weeks remain before the due date, and postmenstrual age (gestational age at birth plus weeks of life). Pregnancy, Birth and Baby (Australia) uses that language for babies who have not reached term equivalent age.

Turn on Born early, set gestational age from 22 to 42 weeks (default 40), and calculate.

Chronological vs biological vs mental age

Comparison of chronological, biological and mental age
KindWhat it measuresWho uses it
Chronological ageCalendar time from birth to a date, as Y;M;DEvery test manual, school, clinic, this calculator
Biological ageAn estimate of how the body is ageing, from markers such as DNA methylation or blood testsResearch and some longevity clinics. See Mayo Clinic Press on biological vs chronological age.
Mental ageThe age at which an average child would earn the same score, from Binet. Ratio IQ was mental age over chronological age times 100Historical. Modern WISC-type tests use deviation IQ against the same chronological age band.

People mix these words. A parent may say a child is "advanced" or "behind". That is not chronological age. Chronological age is the clock the table needs. Biological age is a research estimate and is not a substitute for Y;M;D on a protocol. Mental age is an old scoring idea; do not convert a modern standard score back into a mental age unless a specialist method asks for it.

FAQ

What is chronological age?

Chronological age is the time you have been alive, counted from your date of birth to a chosen date. It is calendar time, not how mature, healthy, or developed you are. Psychologists, speech therapists, and paediatricians use it so every child is measured against the same clock. You can state it in years, months, and days, or in the testing form Y;M;D.

How do you calculate chronological age?

Subtract the birth date from the Age on date, field by field: years, then months, then days. If the days go negative, borrow from the month before the Age on month. If the months go negative, borrow 12 months from the years. A worked example: born 21 December 2018 and tested 8 October 2026 is 7 years, 9 months, and 17 days in the 30-day testing method.

How do you calculate chronological age for testing?

Use the test date, not today, as Age on. If the battery spans two visits, Pearson and most manuals tell you to use the first session date. Turn on testing mode here so every month has 30 days. Write the result as Y;M;D and do not round up. If the published manual for that test conflicts with this tool, the manual wins.

Do you round chronological age up?

No. Pearson's WIAT-III support note says ages are not rounded up. If the child is 7 years, 11 months, and 28 days, you report 7;11;28, not 8;0;0. Rounding would place the child on the wrong row of a norms table. This calculator never rounds.

Do you use 30 days or real month lengths when borrowing?

Testing manuals such as WIAT-III assume every month has 30 days when you borrow. Real life uses calendar month lengths: 28, 29, 30, or 31. The two methods can differ by a couple of days around month ends. This tool lets you switch. For a clinic report, use testing mode. For 'how old am I today', use calendar months.

What date do I use if testing spans two sessions?

Use the date of the first session unless the test manual says otherwise. That keeps the age aligned with the start of the standardised procedure. Enter that date in Age on. Do not use the day you scored the protocol or the day you wrote the report.

What does 7;9;17 mean?

It is years;months;days. 7;9;17 means 7 years, 9 months, and 17 days. The semicolon form is the usual notation in WISC, WIAT, CELF, and speech-language reports. It is compact and avoids mixing units. This calculator prints both the long form and the semicolon form so you can paste either.

What is the difference between chronological age and biological age?

Chronological age counts calendar time from birth. Biological age is an estimate of how your body is ageing, from markers such as DNA methylation, blood tests, or fitness. Two people who are 50;0;0 can have different biological ages. Mayo Clinic Press explains the distinction. This site reports chronological age only.

What is the difference between chronological age and mental age?

Mental age is an older idea from Binet: the age at which an average child would earn the same test score. Ratio IQ was mental age divided by chronological age, times 100. Modern tests such as WISC use deviation IQ, which compares the child with others of the same chronological age. Chronological age is still the clock those norms use.

What is corrected (adjusted) age for premature babies?

Corrected age is chronological age minus the number of weeks the baby was born early. Weeks early equal 40 minus gestational age at birth. A baby born at 32 weeks is 8 weeks early. HealthyChildren.org from the AAP describes this. Vaccines still follow chronological age, not corrected age.

Until what age do you use corrected age?

The American Academy of Pediatrics discusses corrected age for development in the first 2 years. Some clinics keep using it until age 3. This calculator shows corrected age until chronological age 3, then hides it. If Age on is still before the due date, you see weeks before the due date and postmenstrual age instead.

How many months old is my child?

Total months is years times 12, plus leftover months, using the method you selected. A child who is 2;3;10 is 27 months old in that count. Days do not add an extra month. For milestone charts that ask for months only, use this figure and name the method in your notes.

How do I calculate age in days?

Count the whole calendar days between the birth date and the Age on date. 1 January to 2 January is 1 day. This calculator reports total days, weeks, and hours (days times 24) beside the Y;M;D figure. Hours assume midnight to midnight because we do not ask for a birth time.

Is chronological age the same as actual age?

Yes, in ordinary speech. Actual age, calendar age, and chronological age all mean time since birth. People contrast them with biological age, developmental age, or corrected age. When a form asks for chronological age, it wants the Y;M;D clock, not a judgement about how old someone seems.
